Six Degrees of Automotive Separation: New connections!

what possibilities does the Fiat-Chrysler partnership bring to our game?

We’re going to do something different for this week’s Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenge. Normally, we pick two automakers and challenge you to connect the dots between the two, and we’ll get back to that fun next week. But one thing we noticed is that all the connections – the degrees of separation – were forged in decades past, and we could only go over the same ground time after time. But this week’s news that the Fiat-Chrysler partnership was made official, we now have a new connection to explore.

So what is the most interesting possible connection now possible between two automakers thanks to this hookup? For example, we can now link Ferrari to Lamborghini in four steps: Ferrari is owned by Fiat, which also owns Chrysler, which once owned Lamborghini (yes, there are at least two other ways to connect Ferrari and Lamborghini, if you stop to think about it).

And if you feel that the Fiat-Chrysler partnership is a gimme (after all, they were only separated by Simca previously), then feel free to consider other tie-ups currently in the news: Koenigsegg and Saab, Penske and Saturn, Opel and Magna. Let your imagination run wild.

The rules, as before, are simple: A connection consists of one company owning another, merging with another or sharing another’s parts. Explain your connections, and as before, the point isn’t necessarily to do it in the least number of connections, but to do it with style and with obscure connections. If you need examples, check out our previous Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenges.
