Don’t know what caused me to go tripping through the Peugeot section on the Hemmings.com classifieds today, but I’m glad I did, because I found two Pugs worth noting. First off, this gorgeous 1938 Darl’Mat, which the San Diego Collection is offering for sale, with no price listed. As they describe it:
Drawn to racing, Lemans in particular, Darl’Mat commissioned his friend Georgos Paulin to draw and aero body for the 302, one would that he could take to the track as well as the street. Another friend, a well known Parisian coachbuilder Marcel Pourtout, fashioned the cars complex body. In October of 1936, Peugeot introduced the 402 Legere, this was a lightened 402 with a widened box-frame chassis. The competitive potential of a widened, lightened car with the 1991-cc engine and the 402 DS was born. Forty-one Darl’Mat roadsters were built to participate in the 1938 Lemans race they were very successful wining 1st place in the 2-litre class. To celebrate the success at Lemans Darl’Mat ordered 12 similar cars from Pourtout, built on the 302 chassis with the 402 engine. This car was restored in 2001 and raced at the Monterey historics’ in 2000. The car has been a constant conours winner achieving high honors at Pebble Beach, MeadowBrook Hall, Amelia Island, among many other various events throughout the country. The car is in excellent condition and virtually flawless. Fitted with Alligator interior and includes a full set of luggage and all weather equipment. It features a engine turn dash and original gauges. This vehicle is Chassis # 705516.
Very interesting, but, you know, 1 of 41? What if I want something a little more exclusive? I mean, there were 40 other such Darl’Mats built, and I might run across another someday. In that case, I might want to consider another Peugeot the San Diego Collection has for sale, a one-off race car built by Peugeot to run at Tripoli the same year Darl’Mat had his cars built to run at Le Mans. SDC’s description of this one is less generous, noting only that the car includes a supercharged 2.0L engine. That reverse boattail isn’t something you’ll see everyday.
