2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT-P: Attention Hog

2009 Mistsubishi Eclipse
2009 Mistsubishi Eclipse

To pass the time between now and 2011 when the Eclipse will be more significantly overhauled, Mitsubishi has clearly made the decision to snatch a bit of DNA from the Lancer Evolution for the 2009 model year.  While the Eclipse wears the recognizable Mitsubishi trapezoidal-look well; how does what’s under it’s skin stack up?

There is really no mistaking who the Eclipse is marketed towards.  Unlike the Evo, which at least could be marginally justified by a slick talking spouse as a everyday family car, the Eclipse simply does not have the space or let’s say “mature” styling that would appeal to anyone born prior to the Reagan administration.  But even an old fogey like me can admit that the design, while youthful, is successful in overtly conveying a message of speed.  Like nearly every 2+2 coupe produced, the back seat is mostly for show or the smallest of children.  But because of the hatchback configuration, the net capacity of the Eclipse is still a decent 15+ cubic feet of space.  Eating into this space and standard on the GT-P is a 650 watt Rockford Fosgate sound system that features nine speakers, complete with trunk-mounted subwoofer.  I think it is safe to say that not only is the sound system a bit of a tip off as to the demographic that this car is aimed towards, but unfortunately the rest of the interior as well, which is a bit cheap-looking in comparison to the Lancer line of cars.  Outside the top-end GT-P model is particularly aggressive looking with subtle alterations to the  front fascia and fenders that are Lancer-like in their aggressive appearance.  This especially evident from the rear which has a wrap-around wing and dual tailpipes that communicate a deep growl.

These vocalizations are the product of a 3.8 liter V6 that produces 265 horses and 262 lb. feet of torque.  Getting to 60 mph is achieved with this powerplant in 7 seconds and mated to either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed Sportronic transmission good for 26 mpg on the highway.  Other standard items on the Eclipse GT-P include High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels and stability and traction control.

While many in the market for a coupe will opt for something that is a little less obviously intent on grabbing people’s attention, starting at $34,798, the Eclipse GT-P has a very high fun-to-dollars ratio which will still find plenty of young admirers and mid-life crisis victims.

The 2010 Dodge Hornet: It’s Got Soul

After apparently getting dressed on the Kia Motors side of the design closet, Dodge is rapidly moving forward with their production plans for one of their newest vehicles, the Dodge Hornet. Marketing itself as a fresh, new, innovative design, the Hornet’s rear-hinged doors and absent B-pillar lend it features that are strikingly similar to those of the Kia Soul.

Although lacking the Kia Soul’s center-console mounted laptop [which I still maintain is an awesomely bad idea], the Hornet does feature an impressive dash-mounted GPS system and rear-seat tv screens mounted in the head rests. Intent on maximazing interior space, the Hornet features uniquely styled seats that fold completely flat [Reader Activity: Brainstorm lewd innuendos advertising the ample cargo space – points off if submissions include “If the Hornet’s a-rockin...].

Built on the Renault-Nissan B-car platform, the Hornet’s exterior styling is self-proclaimed to be Rallye-car inspired, attempting to bridge the gap between European practiciality and American “flair for the aggressive” [Note to Dodge Marketing Dept.: Look up “Subaru”]. Featuring a 1.6L 16-valve supercharged 4-cylinder engine, the Hornet boasts 170-hp @ 4,000 rpm and offers a pretty impressive performance considering its intended market. From 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 135 mph, Dodge intends to offer the Hornet as direct competition to the MINI Cooper. Considering the Hornet’s engine is manufactured in part by BMW, Dodge might actually be able to do just that [providing, of course, that Kia doesn’t cry “copyright infringement”].

India Needs More Roads or Less People

Mysterious India, land of the Karma Sutra, mango chutney, and over a billion people. And all those people need transportation to their Comcast tech support call center jobs. Scooters and motorcycles are the most popular mode of personal transport in India. In fact, in 2007, the motorcycle and scooter industry sold about 7 million two-wheelers, that’s six times the number of cars sold. But Ratan Tata wants to change that.

Mr. Tata is the Chairman of Tata Motors, maker of The Nano, a small, extremely inexpensive car built specifically for the Indian market. The 10 foot long, 5 foot wide, four door Nano is debuting this year for about 100,000 rupees (about $2,500 dollars). It’s two-cylinder engine will supposedly get 47 miles per gallon; and have a blistering top speed somewhere around 55, no doubt.

The question is: will the tiny Nano even be able to fit on the already cramped Indian roads? The government of India has embarked on a huge national highway project, building roads and flyovers, but they’re still struggling to keep pace with the insane number of vehicles. Some of the country’s most densely populated cities, including Calcutta and Mumbai, are already jammed for hours every day. What’ll happen when people start trading in motorcycles for 4-wheel Nanos? Trouble.

The Green Mile vs. the Quarter Mile; EPA vs. Horsepower

There is a conflict brewing in the auto industry and it is not just with the designers and decision makers. The conflict is in the consumer as well. There are Green forces that are encouraging us to want fuel efficient, low emissions vehicles while at the same time there are Performance forces that encourage us to desire the vehicle that goes faster or hauls more. It is a Frosted Mini Wheat of a conundrum and until there are sufficient cars on the road that satisfy our Frosted Side for performance and our healthy Wheat side with low environmental impact we are going to continue to have this fight.

According to Wards Auto  (via the Motor Authority) the EPA, the federal agency that regulates emissions and determines MPG ratings for cars (among other tasks), is calling for an end to the horsepower wars that they see being waged within the auto industry. Apparently the Gas Guzzler Tax that is slapped on high horsepower and low fuel mileage cars is not deterrent enough. They are calling on the auto industry to scull back the horsepower battle and to refocus their energies on Greener projects. (more…)

Barned Bugatti Sold for $852,500 in Auction at Greenwich Councours

It is truly amazing the number of classics that have been found and revived that had been left for dead out in a field or tucked inside an old barn. Back in the day when gas was cheap and a weekend drive thru the country side was not considered a guilty pleasure it was not uncommon to spot some classic grill or fender peaking through a opened barn door. Most of us are used to seeing a rounded ’50’s model fender or maybe the exposed trunk of a 1960’s Mustang. It would be a rare thing in America to catch a 1938 Bugatti cozied up along the hay and under-growth of a barn, but that is just what happened to one lucky person.

Barned Bugatti

The 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante Coupe that survived all those years in that barn appears to be complete and in good shape considering its barned-state of hibernation. It was expected that this rare find would run somewhere between $300,000 and $400,000 in auction, but it seems word or wallets spread over the barned Bugatti. When the auction closed the winning bidder was $852,500 lighter in the bank account. Ofcourse for a bidder on a classic car of this stature that is not an unsightly price.

Over the years I have witness and her countless stories of barn finds and rusted field flowers. A friend of my fathers discovered and purchased a 1966 K-code Mustang with a HiPo 289 engine. It was all original and had not lost any of its horses while sitting in wait in that field. In another instance I stumbled upon a collection of 4 1920’s Model A’s barely covered along the road at the end of a private homes yard. The word around town was that some people had offered him money for one or some or even all and the owner would not budge.
As always where some see trash others see treasure; like the 1955 barned-up Chevy pictured below. A lot of money and a lot of hard labor over time and you have a classic that could last another lifetime.
 Barned 1955 Chevy

So let that be a warning to all or maybe just a piece of advice. While you are out there whipping up the back-road of where-ever America keep one eye on the road and one eye in the barns and field around you. You never know what you may find peaking back at you.
