Hyundai Accent Takes Back Title Of Cheapest Car In America At $9,970 [Cheapest Car In America]

Nissan made some waves last month when they announced the Nissan Versa 1.6S, a car that would cost only $9,990 and snagged the unofficial title of "cheapest car in America" from Hyundai. The Korean automaker has struck back by dropping the price of their Hyundai Accent GS 3-door from $11,070 to $9,970, besting the Versa by an Andrew Jackson. That money will get you the same 1.6-liter, 110-horsepower engine and five-speed manual transmission found in the regular version. You'll also still get no radio, no air-conditioning and steel wheels. What's the catch? All the other prices remain the same, meaning that if you want a 3-door with an automatic you'll pay a whopping $2,100 premium for the pleasure of having the car choose the gears for you. If you want air-conditioning prepare to pay another $1,600. Full details in the press release below.

Hyundai Accent Retains Crown as America's Least Expensive Car

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Nov 25, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — The country's most dependable sub-compact car is also its most affordable.
The high-mileage 2009 Hyundai Accent has a starting price of $9,970, making it the least expensive new car on the market. But it's also the "Most Dependable Sub-Compact Car" available (as determined by the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study(SM)) and one of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road today — a trifecta that no other car can match.

"Accent is the perfect vehicle for a customer looking for the ideal mix of price, dependability and fuel economy," said Mark Dipko, Small Car product manager. "And as a brand known the world over for its value, we feel it is important to retain our crown as the most affordable new car available."

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai announced even more good news for the Accent, revealing that next year a special high-mileage "Blue" edition will be available that offers even higher levels of fuel economy without adding to the price. Accent "Blue" will feature fuel-efficient modifications to reduce engine friction and rolling resistance, enhance aerodynamics, optimize gearing and revise engine calibrations for maximum efficiency, all adding up to higher fuel mileage and lower emissions than today's model.

The 2009 Accent GS retains the same content as last year's model and has not been reduced to achieve America's best price point. Accent GS offers a 1.6-litre, 110-horsepower engine, power steering, advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, front variable intermittent wipers, 60/40 split fold-down seatback, six-way adjustable driver seat, adjustable head restraints for all seating positions and rear spoiler.

Pricing for all other Accent models remains unchanged, delivering outstanding value throughout the lineup. In addition to the $9,970 Accent GS 3-door with manual transmission, the Accent three-door with automatic transmission starts at $12,070; Accent GLS 4-door with manual transmission starts at $12,920; and the sport-tuned and comprehensively equipped Accent SE 3-door with manual transmission starts at $15,070. Freight charges for Accent are $695.

All Hyundai vehicles sold in the U.S. are covered by The Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty. Hyundai buyers are protected by a 10-year/100,000-mile power train warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 7-year/unlimited-mile anti-perforation warranty and 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance protection.

Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif. is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced by more than 790 Hyundai dealerships nationwide.
Hyundai Accent received the lowest number of problems per 100 vehicles among sub-compact cars in the proprietary J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study(SM). Study based on responses from over 52,000 original owners of 2005 model-year vehicles, measuring more than 250 models. Proprietary study results are based on experiences and perceptions of owners surveyed in January to April 2008. Your experiences may vary. Visit jdpower.com.

First Drive: 2009 Nissan 370Z

Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Nissan 370Z

Stand on any corner in any city, close your eyes and open your ears. Eventually you'll hear the telltale swell of an engine as someone blips the throttle while braking before the bend. This secret auditory handshake among gearheads signals the arrival of a driver schooled in the art of heel-and-toe. And when the 2009 Nissan 370Z goes on sale in January, you won't be able to tell an aspiring Schumacher from Joe the... shoemaker. Nissan's simple yet brilliant "SyncroRev Match" will relegate the artistry of rev-matching to the annals of motoring history. Other automakers compelled to offer manual gearboxes for the dedicated few will doubtlessly adopt the system, and those of us who care - who've unconsciously conditioned ourselves to crane our heads to catch a glimpse of what's coming - will cease to do so. Progress is a double-edged sword and rarely balanced, but don't fret. The 370Z's overly hyped rev-matching system isn't the end of the world, and it's hardly the best part of Nissan's new Z. Follow the jump to find out what is.

Pure Speculation: Saturn’s New Models After the Roger Penske Takeover

It looks like the acquisition of Saturn by the Penske Group will be finalized this September. It looks like all the dealers will remain independent, but will have to sign a new dealer agreement with the new owners. So, why is this of any interest to the CarDomain reader? With the closing of the GM Facility that produced the Saturn Sky (along with the Pontiac Solstice), I though it would be prudent to see what the new Saturn product offerings might look like. So come along with me on a voyage of discovery, and see if the magic crystal ball is working.

According to inside sources from General Motors, the agreement between old GM (The corporation with all the toxic assets that need to be sold off), and the Penske group, GM will have to keep building select Saturn models until the end of 2011. Since the Sky has been put out of it’s misery, and the Saturn Astra won’t be part of the mix because of Opel’s own financial trouble, that only leaves the Aura, the Outlook, and the Vue, at least for the next 2 years. The Aura will be built in the Kansas City Fairfax plant that currently builds the Chevrolet Malibu. The Outlook will be built right along side the other Lambda stablemates at the Lansing Assembly Plant. The Vue will still be built at the Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico, where the Chevrolet HHR is built.

However, since each of these vehicles has a shelf life of about two years, Penske is wasting no time to fill the pipeline with product. Current internet buzz revolves around contract talks Penske is having with Renault, and their Korean Samsung division. This would be a quick way for Renault to get back into the US market, using designs that are already in production, and equipped with Nissan powertrains that already meet US standards. Samsung offers 5 different vehicles in the Korean Home Market; The SM3 (Which is a Nissan Sunny/Sentra, and already set to be discontinued), the New SM3, the SM5, the SM7, and the QM5.

The New SM3 is probably the most interesting of the offerings that could be coming to America. This car is based on the European Renault Megane, and will use proven Nissan 4 cylinder engines. The home market offers the 1.6L Nissan engine that powers the base Nissan Versa here in the US. If this were to come over to America, look for at least the 1.8L, 2.0L or 2.4L Nissan power plants to power this stylish sedan.

The SM5 and the SM7 are both based on the current Nissan Altima, and the previous version of the Maxima. The SM5 is powered by the 2.0L Nissan 4 Cylinder engine found in the North American Sentra, but is this becomes the new Aura, look for the 2.4L to be the base engine. The SM7 is just a V6 version of this car, with more luxury items. It offers the Nissan VQ 3.5L V6, which is probably the best V6 engine in the world.

The Vue will probably be replaced with the QM5, which is the home market version of the Nissan Qashqai, which is a very close relative of the North American Nissan Rouge. There is enough styling differences that the two will not be confused between buyers, and the QM5 actually has a family resemblance to the current Saturn Vue. The Korean Home Market version is powered by either a 2.0L Diesel, or the Nissan 2.5L four cylinder. All of these vehicles will be offered with the Nissan CVT transmission, though I can’t find anything about a manual being offered.

So, do you think offering Korean Built Nissans (and one Renault) as Saturns will help the struggling brand, or do you think this particular business model is doomed to failure before it has time to get off the ground. I am eager to hear what everyone has to say.

Nissan GT-R Does 7:26.7 at the Nordschleife

Seems Nissan is on an unrelenting mission to make the R35 GT-R the fastest supercar in the world. Check out this video of their latest record lap done back in April at the Nurbugring. The driver is Toshio Suzuki and the laptime of 7:26.7 is simply outstanding. I wonder what Porsche will have to say about this one!
